Don’t miss the fun at the 2015 FREE Family Learning Day!
|Thank you to the Vigo County Public Library for sponsoring this post!
Like a lot of people in the Haute, my family has missed hanging out at the Vigo County Public Library. The (temporary) closing of the Youth Services Department (read more about the remodel HERE) means we can’t hang out in one of our favorite indoor spots. If your family has been missing the library too, then I have great news! Our favorite librarians have been working hard to get ready for a great fall event–Family Learning Day.
This Saturday (September 26) is the 21st Annual Family Learning Day. It’ll take place from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. in the parking lot of the Main Branch of the Vigo County Public library, and it’s completely free! There is no cost to any of the activities! Not only that, but every family will be going home with new, free books. (New, free books! They certainly know how to win over this former English major.)
As you wander through the parking lot, you’ll see activities, tents, and displays from 40 local community organizations. These groups will offer free books, a prize drawing for two bikes, popcorn, carriage rides, crafts, games, activities, music and performances (INSIDER TIP: kids love the African drums!).
With this year’s theme of Growing with Nature, the event will feature nature-inspired activities including the Children’s Museum’s hissing cockroaches, a monarch butterfly storytime, and a variety of natural crafts.
If you have a little monkey who might try to pull away and run loose through the parking lot, I have good news. The parking lot will be fenced in! There will be only one way in and out.

The activities are fun and kid-friendly–it’s so much fun, in fact, that last year over 1000 people attended the event!
Family Learning Day is a pro-literacy event designed to support three overall goals: promote family reading, engage with the community, and encourage families to learn together through enjoyable experiences. This isn’t an event with a hidden agenda. It’s not a fundraiser disguised as an event. The library simply wants you to hang out, be reminded of the awesomeness of books and reading, and have some fun (for free) as a family. Okay! If you insist! That’s my kind of invitation.

The event sponsored by Sam’s Club, Altrusa, and the Friends of the Vigo County Public Library.
Although Family Learning Day is completely free to you, the library has decided to allocate some of its marketing budget to sponsor this post on HauteHappenings.com. We are grateful that library believes in the influence of Haute Happenings and chooses to support our small business in this way.
