This post is proudly brought to you by the Vigo County Public Library. We’re grateful that the library chose to spend part of its advertising budget with Haute Happenings. These sponsors help to keep our site free to readers like you. You can help us thank them for their support by attending these great events!
In 2018, the Vigo County Public Library won’t be hosting a real, live reindeer meet and greet session, but there is still plenty happening at the library in December!
Two of the December events they’re most excited to host are “The Miracle Continues” and “Grinch Galore”!
Miracle on 7th Street has arrived at VCPL. Watch snowflakes being printed on our 3D printers, create an origami snowflake, eat snowy snacks, and enjoy frosty activities. Check out our window display and decorated tree downtown.
Saturday, December 8 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm
The Vigo County Public Library’s Poplar Street entrance will close Monday, December 3 to conduct foundation and drainage repairs.
Customers are encouraged to use the new South entrance or the Walnut Street entrance of the Main Library during the construction. The Library’s new South entrance allows for parking close to the building, as well as handicap accessible parking. While the parking lot will remain open, street parking along Seventh and Walnut Streets is available for closer access.
The Library is experiencing water leaks to the lower level; funneling water away from the foundation is the immediate focus. This large-scale excavation project will address storm water drains and expansion joints, allow for the examination of the foundation for cracks, and the application of a rubberized membrane to foundation walls. Weather depending, the entrance is slated to reopen at the end of January 2019.
“The library building is 40 years old and repairs and proactive measures are often required to maintain the integrity of structure,” said Kristi Howe, Vigo County Public Library Executive Director. “We understand the inconvenience this may cause for many of our customers, especially during the winter months, but timely repairs are important and we will work to accommodate customer needs during this project.”
West Branch in West Terre Haute is open Monday through Friday for customer use, as well. The branch is open Monday and Wednesday from 12:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Adults, head to the library to snag a great deal on gifts!
Currently in its 34th year, the Friends of the Vigo County Public Library work to promote the Vigo County Public Library as a cultural, educational and recreational asset to Vigo County.
More than $33,000 has been donated from the Friends to the Vigo County Public Library (VCPL) for the current year. The Friends support several VCPL programs: Summer Reading Program, Big Read, after-school programs, literacy and English Language Learning activities, book giveaways, virtual reality technology, Maker Camp & STEM programming, speaker series, Fandom Prom, Battle of the Books, First Grade tours and more.
The organization offers opportunities to make new friends and to volunteer year round with pricing and sorting books, working at book sales, serving on committees, working on special projects and promoting the Library and its services in the local community.
The Friends welcome donations of books, music, movies and games that are in good condition for resale. A donation letter for tax purposes can be available if requested. Membership information is available at the Library, as well as on the Friends’ website: www.friendsofthevigolibrary.org/join.
