35 Things to Do in February

We have a little less than two months left in winter. Why not make the most of the cold, gray days by getting out of the house and having some fun!? This list of 35 things to do in February should help keep us all from going stir crazy. ūüėČ

Our February event calendar is proudly brought to you by our friends at KinderCenter. This month, Miss Rhonda wants her KinderMusik regulars to invite a friend to enjoy a first class for FREE!

If you’re reading this and you’re not already connected to KinderMusik classmates, no worries!¬†If two friends who have never tried a class before want to try a class together, then¬†both newbies can try a class for free!

Flying solo? That’s fine too! Miss Rhonda will get you connected to a buddy!¬†Maybe you’ll even find your mom tribe at KinderMusik.

These trial classes are best for children up to age 5.

35 February Events

 

February 23. Kids’ Night Out at the Vigo County YMCA.¬†¬†With snacks, games and activities to fit the theme, all participants are winners at the Y! Kids are encouraged to wear their red white & blue to represent the USA at this fun party for the Gold!

February 23. Casual Friday Night Ride with Griffin Bike Park. Free event for all ages. Finish your week with a fun, relaxing ride through our woods at Griffin Bike Park. Hybrids and mountain bikes are preferable; however, helmets are required. Adult supervision is required for ages 13 and under. Bring a bike light or headlamp to light the trail.

February 24. Athlete Symposium. A free educational event for young athletes and their parents. Guest speakers will be Melanie Boeglin White and Tony McGee.

February 27. Babies ages 0-16 months have the opportunity to try a FREE trial music class for babies at KinderCenter. Must register in advance!

February 27.¬†Tot Time at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. This week’s theme is “Bright Lights.”¬†Let’s shine a light on the wonders of light. What can light pass through? How do you mix colored light? Explore the scientific properties of light with hands-on science experiments. Register in advance. Included with museum admission.¬†Find out more about Tot Time Here.¬†

February 27.¬†1:00 p.m. Read a book and make art at the Swope Art Museum’s Art Start. This FREE program is perfect for ages 2-5.¬†Find more info and themes in our Art Start review.¬†

February 2. Opening day party at the new location of The Red Room Cakery. 

February 2. First Friday: Love Downtown. You’re going to LOVE this month’s options! Dinner, crafts, snacks, robots, art, and virtual reality!

February 3. Wabash Valley Coder Dojo. Ages 7-17: Learn to code, build a website, create an app or a game and explore technology in an informal, creative and social environment.

February 3. SLIME day at Charm School. Looking for something fun for your kiddos to do on a Saturday? Join Angela to create your very own batch of SLIME. We will attempt to make at least 2 different versions of slime. Recommended for ages 7 and up.

February 3. Buffalo Soldier Full Moon Ride at Griffin Bike Park. $10 per rider with kids under 18 free. All Riders, all ages. In Celebration of Black History Month. Sundance Mountain Bike Skills Clinic and the Trek Women Advocates will be honoring our fallen soldiers by hosting a fundraising winter ride at Griffin Bike Park!

February 3. Learning Lab-Burps, Farts, and Poop-Oh, Gross!¬†Learn about the body’s digestive system. Discover how the stomach functions and creates your burps and poop. Learning Lab is a series of drop-off programs at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum for kids in K-4th grades and will be presented in a classroom style. The series is linked together by general theme — grossology and the human body in this case — however they are designed to standalone, so your child can attend as many sessions as you wish.

February 4. Madrigals magic at the Swope. The Madrigals of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College (SMWC), led by Grammy Award winner professor Michael Boswell are gracing the Swope art Museum and our visitors with their enchanting Acapella vocals. Free event!

February 6. 1:00 p.m. Read a book and make art at the Swope Art Museum’s Art Start. This FREE program is perfect for ages 2-5. Find more info and themes in our Art Start review.¬†

February 7. A is for Airplane. Mommy & Me/Daddy & Me Bricks 4 Kidz Workshop at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum.¬†During A is Airplane we will have story time, build LEGO Duplo airplanes, make a spin art airplane propeller and free play with friends.¬†Workshops are included with museum admission and included with your membership.

February 8. Family Fun Night at the Honey Creek Mall with the Vigo County Public Library. Winter is a great time to look for signs of wildlife. Explore tracks, create artwork, and explore local wildlife with library staff and the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department.

February 8. “Mail a Sandwich” day with Chick fil A Kids’ Club.

February 9. Mardi Gras party to benefit the Swope Art Museum.

February 9.¬†Mental Health America of Vigo County’s “Too Good For Drugs” program is hosting a fun family event at The Bouncin Barn! Admission for kids will be paid for by the program. “Too Good For Drugs” is an awareness/prevention initiative encouraging kids to remain drug-free.

February 10.¬†1:00 p.m. Read a book and make art at the Swope Art Museum’s Art Start. This FREE program is perfect for ages 2-5.¬†Find more info and themes in our Art Start review.¬†

February 10. Family Day in Clay. Family Day in Clay at the Torner Center is open to all ages. Join our instructor and learn to create with clay. Cost: $10/project Please register by February 9 at 4:00 pm by calling 812-232-0147.

February 10. Wabash Valley Maker’s Fest in Sullivan, Indiana.¬†Workshops will allow participants to fly a drone, program a robot, discover STEM activities and toys for home, plug into STEAM careers available in our community, see some of the newest technologies used in the classrooms, learn about the largest growing career fields in the US, and many, many more.

February 10. 9:30-11:30 a.m. at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. Baby explorer for ages 0-2.¬†The world is a colorful place and children notice it early on. Mix and match, use color words, and have fun making colorful memories. Baby Explorer is for ages 0- 2 and their caregiver. Engage with your little explorer to nurture early learning through play in a welcoming environment full of socialization opportunities. Your child will learn to interact with you while also learning about our amazing world. Each class we will explore a different topic through books, play, and movement, inviting your little ones to use their minds, bodies and senses. Included with Admission.

February 10 and 11. Hands-on science at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum.¬†The Wabash Valley Amateur Radio Association is celebrating their 90th Anniversary this year and as part of their celebration they will be at the Children’s Museum showing the basic principles behind all the gadgets we use everyday – radio, TV, cell phones, and wi-fi. Association members will show how families can learn together to harness radio for hours of fun and potentially as a career for your youngster. Talk around the world, through satellites or with astronauts aboard the International Space Station, and discover new ways to use electronics and computers at a complete station set-up to demonstrate the exciting world of HAM Radio. Included with Admission.

February 12. Nature Program for Preschoolers at Deming Park. Parents are required to stay with children. Open to ages 2-5 years old. Children need to be registered before the day of class. Call the Torner Center at 812-232-0147 to register. Cost: $5.

February 13. Pancake Day with Pancake Bot.¬†Celebrate National Pancake Day by designing your own pancake on a computer and then watch it print on the world’s first 3D food printer: ThePancakeBot at the Vigo County.

February 13. Meet a Certified Therapy Dog. Looking for a warm fuzzy friendship in the middle of February? Hamilton Center’s Cynthia Rotman will warm your heart with a visit from a certified therapy dog and explain the type of care and the responsibilities this furry friend provides at the WEST branch of the Vigo County Public Library.

February 16. 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m. Hands-on Science at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum.¬†Join Terre Haute’s Team Storm from First Lego League to create your own robot creations and run the robot they created. Included in Admission.

February 16. Safe Sitter Class with CASY at the WEST Branch of the Vigo County Public Library.¬†Taught in a fun and interactive format, Safe Sitter¬ģ teaches participants safe and nurturing child care techniques, behavior management skills and appropriate responses to medical emergencies. Free to those who register. Pizza will be provided for lunch. Ages 11 and up.

February 17. Learning Lab–It’s Bloody Gross!¬†Come learn about the human heart and our blood stream at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. Discover how your heart functions, create your own blood, then dissect a heart. Katie Miller, South TH High School biology teacher will demonstrate dissecting a lamb heart. $8 per session for members. $12 per session for non-members.

February 17. Mardi Gras Party for the Clay County YMCA. Join the Clay County Y Mardi Gras Party for a Cause on February 17th! Guests will enjoy a social from 6:30-7:00pm, live music by the Max Allen Band, and a Cajun Style Dinner.

February 17. Pancake Breakfast at Fowler Park for the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Department. Our 31st annual Pancake Breakfast menu includes pancakes, sausage patties, Prairie Creek Park maple syrup and a drink. Gluten free pancakes and sugar free syrup will be available while supplies last. Maple syrup will be available for purchase during breakfast. Tour our Pioneer Village cabins and Sugar Cabin to see how we boil the sugar down. $5 per plate for ages 7 and up. Ages 6 and under pay $2 per plate.

February 17. Join the Clay County Y Mardi Gras Party for a Cause on February 17th! Guests will enjoy a social from 6:30-7:00pm, live music by the Max Allen Band, a Cajun Style Dinner, and Silent/Live Auction featuring donations from a variety of area businesses!

February 19. Free Presidents Day admission at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.

February 19. FREE Presidents Day admission to Conner Prairie in Fishers, Indiana. Find out why this interactive museum is worth the drive HERE. 

February 19. Bricks 4 Kidz Day Camp at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum and President’s Day Games.¬†Can you name the 45 presidents? Play bingo, matching and 4-in-a-row games as you get to know them.¬†The games are included with admission. Day camp has an additional fee.¬†

February 19. Purdue Extension and Vigo County 4-H present “Robotics Challenge.”¬†Did you miss out on our first Robotics Challenge? Vigo County will be hosting our second Robotics Challenge on February 19th. In the first Robotics Challenge, we made robotic marshmallow catapults. This challenge will involve more coding and a completely different task to complete! 4-Hers and non 4-Hers are welcome!

February 21.¬†Q is for Quilt.¬†Mommy & Me/Daddy & Me Bricks 4 Kidz Workshop at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum.¬†Patchwork Quilt workshop for children 2-5 years of age and their caregivers. Parent & child workshops include a story time, Duplo build, craft and free play time. Included with Admission. Please register in advance.
