The sleepy days of summer wrap up this month and back-to-school is on everyone’s mind! But as the kids prepare to hit the books, use our calendar to squeeze in some family fun!

Monday, August 3. Auditions for Clue at Community Theatre of Terre Haute. It’s a dark and stormy night, and you’ve been invited to a very unusual dinner party. Each of the guests has an alias, the butler offers a variety of weapons, and the host is, well, dead. So whodunit? Join the iconic oddballs known as Scarlet, Plum, White, Green, Peacock, and Mustard as they race to find the murderer in Boddy Manor before the body count stacks up. Based on the cult classic film and the popular board game, CLUE is a madcap comedy that will keep you guessing until the final twist.

Wednesday, August 5. Brewed Book Club at Bear’s Coffee. Once a month, we gather at Bear’s Coffee & Roasting Co. with a latte in hand, baked goods on the table, and a book we all couldn’t stop thinking about. Every member gets their own Book Journal. A mix of scrapbook, reading journal, and memory book. We’ll spend part of each meeting decorating our pages with themed stickers, washi tape, mini book covers, quotes, ratings, favorite characters, and little memories from each month’s read. After we’ve talked about the book, we’ll all work on our journal pages together, trade supplies, and get creative.

August 6-9. Hoverally 2026. Did you know Terre Haute is not only the birthplace of the Coke bottle, but also American hovercraft culture? Fifty years ago, local innovators teamed up right here in Terre Haute to incorporate the Hoverclub of America. At the exact same time, Neoteric Hovercraft was getting its start here, going on to pioneer patented technology used in over 50 countries. Because of that legacy, the very first national hovercraft rallies were hosted right on the Wabash River.

Friday, August 7. Downtown Terre Haute First Friday. Expect a lively, convivial evening of local makers, pop-up vendors, and neighborhood personalities—think handcrafted jewelry, indie art, gourmet snacks, and delightfully quirky gifts you didn’t know you needed. Family-friendly and pet-friendly activities keep the atmosphere warm and inclusive, while late-night food options and surprise performances add extra fuel to the fun.

Friday, August 7. Lobby Bar Pop-Up. We’re excited to share that the Ohio Building will be hosting a special Lobby Bar pop-up during Downtown Terre Haute’s First Friday on Friday, August 7th from 5–9 PM!

Saturday, August 8. Back-to-School with Collett Park Christmas Walk. Free backpacks and school supplies, $5.00 hair cuts, $5 mini photo shoot, free cakepops!

Saturday, August 8. Infinity Day at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. Infinity isn’t just an idea for mathematicians. It is a real and beautiful thing that anyone can experiment with. Celebrate infinity by looking at all of the Infinite Sums that make up the world around us. Make mobius strips, propagate plants, play with fractals, create tessellation patterns, and look at mirror reflections!

Saturday, August 8. Bigfoot stories, sightings, and research at the BRAZIL Public Library.

Saturday, August 8. Creepy Crawly Fest at Hawthorn Park. Local organizations set up in and around the shelter with kids activities and face painting! The speaker schedule is as follows: 1:00 PM – Grasshopper Stories with Dr. Dhaneesh Bhaskar from Global Center for Species Survival, Indianapolis Zoo. This is their first time presenting outside of Asia! The talk will be geared toward families and kids, and will discuss the importance of grasshoppers, fun stories, and their roles in the ecosystem. 2:00 PM – Animal Tales Dinosaurs Alive show! There will be a mixture of Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, and Others present during the show. This is an interactive show, and at the end of the program everyone will get to touch an animal on the way out.

Join Ouabache Land Conservancy for the 8th Annual Jackson-Schnyder Day on Saturday, August 15, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon as we honor the lasting legacy of Dr. Marion Jackson and Julius Schnyder, whose vision and stewardship helped preserve this special natural area for future generations.

Saturday, August 15. Summer in the Village at Fowler Park. Join the VCPRD every third Saturday of the month May through August from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. for our Summer in the Village! Our cabin caretakers will open up their cabins for all to explore and demonstrate early 19th century skills and crafts. Each month will have a focus on a different craft or demonstration for you to learn! August – Tradesman.

Saturday, August 1. Dino Dash: 2026 Summer Reading Wrap-Up with the Vigo County Public Library. Join family, friends, and the Vigo County Public Library for an exciting Dino Dash! Come dressed up as your favorite dinosaur, dino-wrangler, or chaotician for a morning at Maple Avenue Nature Park. Choose between one lap or five laps, then run, walk, or stomp around Maple Avenue Lake while avoiding dinosaur attacks from the sidelines. When you’ve completed your laps, pick out a tiny dinosaur as your prize for participating! Complimentary water will be supplied. Everyone is welcome, whether you want to participate, watch the action, or listen to DJ Danny Wayne and purchase refreshments from local food vendors on-site. Parking will be available across the street at Ouabache Elementary School’s front and back parking lots.
