31 Things to Do in August! Calendar of Events for Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley

The sleepy days of summer wrap up this month and back-to-school is on everyone’s mind! But as the kids prepare to hit the books, use our calendar to squeeze in some family fun!

CALENDAR OF EVENTS IN August IN TERRE HAUTE AND THE WABASH VALLEY

August 1-9th. Summer used book sale hosted by Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. Come and browse hundreds of gently used books. Books are not priced. You decide what your donation amount for the books you select will be.

Monday, August 2nd. Ignite Kit: Sparking a Conversation about Cats from the Vigo County Public Library. This kit will include an invitation to both a virtual and an outdoor discussion, as well as a list of recommended reading.

August 3rd and 4th. FREE summer movie (Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) at Robinson Theater. 

Tuesday, August 3. National Night Out at the Forest Park Pool.  This event will be free and opened up for anyone to join. There will also be activities going on at the Cow Palace during this time.

Tuesday, August 3. Greene County National Night Out. Greene County National Night Out (NNO) is back for 2021! Come to the Linton City Park on Aug 3, from 5p to 8p, for food, fun, music and to meet our great NNO Partners. We will have lots of Police Officers and vehicles from all Local Police Agencies, as well as many other first responders and vehicles.
There will also be some less cool Firetrucks around, if you’re into that sort of thing. 

Wednesday, August 4. The LAST museum in the park from the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. Plop-Plop, Fizz Fizz, oh what fun it is. Create a variety of chemical reactions that make gas. Try your hand at making some fizzy messes. Museum in the Park is a series of two-hour science sessions for kids going into 1st – 6th grades and held at various local parks. The day will be from 9:30 – 11:30am at Collett Park and is limited to 15 children each.

August 2-6th.Teacher appreciation week at Common Ground Yoga. Teachers can take up to 3 classes at Common Ground Yoga for FREE using the PROMOCODE:TEACHERSROCK. 

Wednesday, August 4. Girl Scouts Skate free at The Wigwam. 

Thursday, August 5. Creative Construction Learning Lab with the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. 

Friday, August 6. After waiting 1 1/2 years, Children’s Theatre of Terre Haute’s Lion King will return to the stage! Tickets are $15. Call (812) 264-5930.

Friday, August 6. “Stories from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Historic District” opens at the Swope Art Museum. “Stories from Saint Mary-of-the-Woods Historic District” can be viewed in the 2nd Floor Lobby and Education Galleries of the Swope Art Museum, from August 6th through October 4th, 2021. An opening reception from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Friday, August 6th will feature remarks by Tommy Kleckner, director of Indiana Landmarks Western Regional Office. The Swope Art Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. and there is no cost for admission.

August 9, 10, and 11. Back-to-school supplies for Vigo County students from The Salvation Army. 

Monday, August 9. First day of school for Clay County schools in Brazil, IN.

Tuesday, August 10. Power Wheel Nationals in Brazil, IN.  Bring your kids, power wheels, golf carts and mopeds for a night of family fun! Children will race 60ft down the race track and adults will race the full 1/8th mile.

Thursday, August 12. 4pm-7pm. Back-to-School Bash at MCC 12 Points. Music, games, free food truck, free backpacks and supplies from Katy’s Kids, free foam party from Foam Homies, free haircuts. ALL FREE! 

Friday, August 13. Pick up of “Pizza Night Kits” from Harvest Bakery. Order in advance! 

Sunday, August 15. Family Sunday Funday Sprint Race. MSCS Sprint cars are back for a Sunday evening race featuring plenty of top open wheelers. The Indiana Late Model Series and Scott’s Custom Colors DIRTcar Modifieds will also race.

Monday, August 16. First Day of School for Vigo County School Corporation.

Monday, August 16. DIY Graphic Novel Coasters with the Vigo County Public Library. Upcycle graphic novels to create vibrant, custom coasters featuring your favorite comic book characters!

Thursday, August 19. Parachute play at the West branch of the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 0-5: Summer may be coming to a close, but there’s still time to play outside! Grab your sunscreen and bring your child to the West Branch Library to make new friends and play interactive, cooperative games with a giant parachute.

Saturday, August 21. Summer in the Village. Join Vigo County Parks and Rec for “Summer in the Village” as their cabin caretakers open up their cabins for all to explore and demonstrate early 19th century skills and crafts.

Saturday, August 21. The Wildflower Market at the Vigo County Fairgrounds. 75 venders, food trucks, wineries, boutiques, and more! 

Thursday, August 26. Parachute Play at the west branch of the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 0-5: Summer may be coming to a close, but there’s still time to play outside! Grab your sunscreen and bring your child to the West Branch Library to make new friends and play interactive, cooperative games with a giant parachute.

Friday, August 27. FREE movie in the park: National Treasure. Bring your family, friends, blankets and chairs and join us for Vigo County Parks & Recreation Department’s Movie in the Park summer series with DeeJay Danny Wayne! The third movie of the 2021 summer Movie in the Park series is “National Treasure” (2004) rated PG and will be showing at Lee Fields Park in West Terre Haute. 

Friday, August 27. Kids’ Night Out at the Vigo County YMCA. Adults, plan a night for yourselves and let your children head to the Vigo County YMCA for an evening packed full of fun activities! (We’ve heard that this event has been postponed until September.)

Saturday, August 28. Terre Haute Bowling Center Junior League Sign Up. Who doesn’t love free pizza and bowling? Join on Saturday, August 28th, from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm for Junior League Bowling sign-up party, with free pizza and bowling. Junior League Bowling starts Saturday, September 4th at 10:00 am and is open to children ages 5-17.

Saturday, August 28. Griffin Bike Park Wabashiki Night Ride. Bike the Wabashiki Trail with our Griffin Bike Park Manager and VCPRD Natural Resource Programmer on an adventurous 10-mile fundraising ride through the river bottoms.
