42 Things to Do in August! Calendar of Events for Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley

The sleepy days of summer wrap up this month and back-to-school is on everyone’s mind! But as the kids prepare to hit the books, use our calendar to squeeze in some family fun!

Thursday, August 24. Cub Scout sign up night. Join for an informational open house and sign up event at Terre Haute First Baptist Church. Cub Scouting is a great program for the whole family, with activities ranging from camping, fishing, and hiking, to STEM, Pinewood Derby, and service.

Thursday, August 24. The boys are back in town! Join “Scriptless in Seattle” for a FREE comedy show at Little Bear Coffee Co.

Friday, August 25. Terre Haute Night Market. A night market that celebrates local businesses, entertainment, culture, and food.

Friday, August 25. Bourbon and Blues. A great event to lift your spirits! Join the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra and Title Sponsor Labor Link for an evening of bourbon tastings and great music performed by the Men of Note Jazz Band at Hulman Center! Enjoy exclusive tastings that will expose your palate to rare, unique, and highly sought after bourbon brands while munching on a wide selection of appetizers, dancing, and browsing the silent auction. All proceeds go directly to benefitting the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra’s mission of providing Great Music! Close to Home.

Saturday, August 26. Terre Haute 2nd Annual Disability Resource Fair. Exhibitors will talk about the services and resources to assist individuals and families. There will be interactive areas, food, raffles and more!

Saturday, August 26. 2023 Wabash River Run. Canoe and kayak race on the Wabash River from Montezuma Indiana to Clinton Indiana. This event is to raise money for the Parke Vermillion County Humane Society.

Saturday, August 26 and Sunday, August 27.Bridgeton Civil War Days. Visitors can interact with the soldiers and civilians in Civil War era clothing and learn first hand how our ancestors lived! Exciting live skirmishes, drilling, period camps, a Civil War field hospital, signal corps, pioneer living demonstrations. Great first hand learning for the kids, fun for the whole family! Plenty of food, free parking, no admission. Come on out for a day of fun in Bridgeton!

Monday, August 28. Haute Create Cosplay Co-Op with the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 15 & Up: Are you building your next cosplay masterpiece for an upcoming convention? Work alongside other like-minded makers and creators, access Haute Create’s array of innovative technology, and receive assistance from Vigo County Public Library’s Tech Team when you need it at the Haute Create Cosplay Co-Op. Every month, the Cosplay Co-Op will allow you to get hands-on with 3D printers, a laser cutter, sewing machines, and more! Please bring your own materials for your costume.

Tuesday, August 29 or Wednesday, August 30. Fall callout night for Terre Haute Torpedoes swim team.

Wednesday, August 30. Intro to Robotics: Junior League with the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 9–14: Encourage your child’s creativity, curiosity, and critical thinking skills with Intro to Robotics: Junior League. At this kid-friendly session of Intro to Robotics, your child will learn how to program simple movements into a robot using block programming—a system that allows your child to drag and assemble pre-created, colorful blocks of code into their program without having to learn the syntax of a programming language.

Saturday, August 5. Baby Social Hour: Building Connections at the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 0–2: Your little one can broaden their horizons, explore new environments, and build their social skills while you learn how to encourage them to learn more about the world at Baby Social Hour. This month, discuss how reading to your baby improves their future cognitive abilities by building special connections called synapses with Dora Garratόn, Vigo County Public Library Youth Services librarian and formally trained Mother Goose. Tummy time mats, infant mirrors, and other infant-friendly toys will be available.

Thousands of items will be available at low prices, from current bestsellers to your favorite classics. Proceeds from your purchases will be used to fund Library programs and services you enjoy!

Saturday, August 5. Artventure: Weaving. Drop in and join spinning wheel demonstrations, make and take mini weavings, a collaborative weaving project, Woolbur storytime, and more. All for FREE!

Ages 12–18: Whether you’re starting your freshman year or prepping for standardized college tests, managing your stress will help you sleep better, reduce anxiety, and allow you to connect to others more easily. Spend an afternoon preparing for the new school year by exploring meditation techniques and learning how regular meditation can benefit you.

Tuesday, August 8 and 22. Building Buddies at the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 2-5: Help your little one build more than towers at Building Buddies! Listen to a story together then build with blocks to improve your child’s motor skills, teach them to solve problems, and develop their social skills by playing with others. Lego® Duplos, Giant Lincoln Logs®, and Giant Legos® will be available.

Saturday, August 12 and Saturday, August 20. Big Cat Yoga at the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. Stretch your boundaries with Big Cat Yoga! Our experienced instructor, Jaci, will guide you through an hour of fun and physically challenging poses, right next to our big cat enclosures. Afterwards refuel with a little brunch, before heading out on a private tour.

Monday, August 14. Tiny Tot Time with the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 0–2: Introduce your infant or toddler to new books, experiences, and skills while you strengthen your bond with them at Tiny Tot Time! In this group setting, your child will interact with children their age, learn to listen to others as a librarian reads to them, and strengthen their hands through fingerplays, shakers, and scarves. You will also discover tips for how to build these skills at home. After storytime, you and your child can spend an additional half-hour socializing with other parents and their children!

Tuesday, August 15. Pack-to-school kickoff event for Cub Scouts. Current Pack 200 Scouts are encouraged to attend and bring a friend you think will LOVE Scouting!

Wednesday, August 16. Wiggle Worm Storytime with the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 2–5: Start your toddler or preschooler on the path to a successful year in Kindergarten with Wiggle Worm Storytime. At Wiggle Worm Storytime, your child will build early learning skills through listening to, reading, and discussing stories; practicing the alphabet; and expanding their vocabulary. They will also develop fine motor skills by performing fingerplays and body movement-based activities while learning how to cooperate with others in a group setting. Each storytime ends with a half-hour session of free play for you and your child to socialize with others.

Tuesday, August 1. Auditions for young actors theatre at Community Theatre of Clay County. Come join in the fun of auditioning for our Young Actors production of “No Strings Attached” (a musical adaptation of the classic Pinocchio.)

Tuesday, August 1. National Night Out in Forest Park in Brazil, IN. Hot dogs, chips, soda, and free swimming at the Forest Park Pool.

Wednesday, August 2 and 16. Bingo by the Books at the WEST branch of the Vigo County Public Library. Gather with your friends and neighbors for refreshments and be ready to shout, “Bingo!” as you play traditional and non-traditional bingo games with the chance to win prizes. Bingo cards and number makers will be provided.

Thursday, August 3 and 17. Lego Lab with the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 6–11: Challenge your child’s construction skills, teamwork abilities, and creativity at Lego® Lab! Your child can attempt the monthly challenge or build their own designs. At the end of the evening, spend a few minutes touring everyone’s designs and learn how others solved problems in their own builds. Your child’s design will be part of a month-long display in Youth Services.

Wednesday, August 23. Teen Trivia Night with the Vigo County Public Library. Ages 12–18: Do you know the name of the alternate dimension in Netflix’s Stranger Things? Can you list all the Star Wars movies in order of release? Then you might be the next Teen Trivia champion! Bring your friends or meet new teammates as you work in groups of 6 to be the first to answer trivia questions in film, music, science, literature, fandoms, and more. Each team will choose a team name and earn points for each correct answer. The winners will receive 3D-printed trophies and bragging rights!
