Tuesday, May 12. Terre Haute EARTHlings is hosting a speaking competition! As our community begins important conversations about building a new high school and refurbishing existing buildings, the EARTHlings Speaking Competition is giving students the mic to be part of that future. This year’s theme “Our Schools, Our Future” invites K–12 students to share their ideas on how schools can be built and remodeled in more sustainable, forward-thinking ways. From energy efficiency to green spaces to healthier learning environments… their ideas matter. Auditions are OPEN through May 5th!

Walk the nature trail or for a $5 donation you can go on a guided walk with a llama or alpaca on the trail. We plan to have food and music. Meet the farm residents in the barn. Friday, May 29. Start the summer with a splash at the 2026 Summer Reading Kick-Off! Play in the blast from the Foam Homies’ foam cannon, toss around beach balls, and dance to the music. Step into a prehistoric cave to create your own rock art using paint sticks and crayons, then head back out to the foam. Before the party ends, sign up for Summer Reading 2026, and select a new book to take home.
Please wear quick-drying, comfortable clothes. The foam is hypoallergenic and dye-free. Toddlers ages 3 and under will have a separate play area from older children.
Friday, May 29. Erasure Poetry at VCPL 12 Points. Try a new form of creative expression at Erasure Poetry. Use a marker to redact a printed page, revealing only the words that speak to you and shape a unique poem. No writing experience needed—just curiosity and a willingness to play with language.

It’s time to head out on the Oregon Trail in a life-sized recreation of the classic computer game. During your journey from Independence, Missouri, to Willamette Valley in Oregon, you and your team will encounter broken wagons, dangerous wildlife, and raging rivers. Can you work together to overcome the challenges of frontier travel—or will you die of dysentery? Please wear comfortable walking shoes and weather-appropriate clothing; the trail will begin at Dewey Point and end at Fairbanks Park.

Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3. Civil War Days at Billie Creek Village–the largest Civil War reenactment in Indiana! Civil War Days at Billie Creek is more than a reenactment — it’s a chance for the whole family to step back in time and experience history in a way you can see, hear, and feel.
Walk through historic camps, watch demonstrations, visit with reenactors, explore the village, and hear the thunder of the main battle at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. Saturday night firing and Civil War Ball. Kids love the horses, cannons, and hands-on sights of camp life, while adults enjoy the history, shopping with sutlers, and the full immersive experience of the weekend. May 2–3, 2026. Sunday, May 3. Join the Girls on the Run 5k! Each season comes to an end with a celebratory 5K. This closing event gives program participants of all abilities a tangible sense of accomplishment. Crossing the finish line instills confidence through completion and is a joyful moment program participants always remember!
