Have you heard of Girls on the Run?!
For the next three months, we’ll be shining a spotlight on this incredible program! At the beginning of August, Girls on the Run is looking for sites (schools, homeschool groups, etc) and coaches.
As a Girls on the Run coach, you’ll inspire confidence in participants while working with amazing individuals who share your passion for empowering girls. Sign up to be a role model, an inspiration, and a leader in girls’ journey toward self-discovery and success. Visitors can interact with the soldiers and civilians in Civil War era clothing and learn first hand how our ancestors lived! Exciting live skirmishes, drilling, period camps, a Civil War field hospital, signal corps, pioneer living demonstrations. Great first hand learning for the kids, fun for the whole family! Plenty of food, free parking, no admission. Come on out for a day of fun in Bridgeton!

Friday, August 1. Head to 12 Points for the Blueberry Ice Cream Social! 5pm-8pm in conjunction with the 12 Points First Friday Events. Come check out the Terre Foods Building renovations and the12 Points First Friday Event on August 1st from 5pm-8pm. More importantly come get your blueberry sundae with fresh compote and help support Terre Foods. Vanilla Ice Cream Sundae with Compote $5. Vanilla Ice Cream $3. As they work toward opening the store and utilizing our resources for renovations we are paring down Blueberry Fest this year and are not able to offer fresh blueberries from northern Indiana for sale this year.

Saturday, August 2. Join for the first ever Vigo County Public Library Color Run/Walk, which will bring families, friends, and library supporters together for a fun, colorful day! Proceeds for the event will be going towards the wonderful VCPL First Grade Tour Program, which welcomes Vigo County first graders to explore the library, where they learn all that the library offers while also taking a book home to their personal library! At this community-centered event, we’ll be inviting participants to run or walk around the beautiful Maple Avenue Nature Park in a one-loop or five-loop option. Registration is FREE!

Your child can attempt the monthly challenge or build their own designs. At the end of the evening, spend a few minutes touring everyone’s designs and learn how others solved problems in their own builds. Parents and caregivers with children under nine should assist with building.
Monday, August 4.Coffee & Crosswords at VCPL 12 Points. Sharpen your pencil and your mind at Coffee & Crosswords! Spend an hour relaxing with crosswords or word searches while you sip on coffee and chat with other cruciverbalists—a fifteen letter word for people who enjoy crosswords. Do you not have the time to stay? Stop by the 12 Points Library and pick up a crossword puzzle to take home!

Wednesday, August 6. Teddy Bear Picnic at WEST VCPL. Ages 0–12: Your child and their favorite stuffed friend are in for a treat at the Teddy Bear Picnic! Spend the afternoon playing carnival games, going on a scavenger hunt, painting on the sidewalk, and listening to stories at an old-fashioned picnic! Refreshments will be provided. The program has a limited number of seats available. Please register each attendee individually. If this event has reached maximum capacity, non-registrants may be turned away on the day of the event.
Wednesday, August 6. Griffin Bike Park Youth Team. Do you have a young rider between ages 7-18 that would like to learn to ride better? Or just ride with kids his age and skill level? Or maybe learn to race? We have the program for them! Teams are broken down by skill levels and age. We teach fundamentals, racing techniques and above all how to have fun on a mountain bike.

From key terms, software tools, and the slicing process, you’ll follow along with step-by-step instructions that cover the basics of using Bambu Studio, including how to find, edit, and prepare a simple design for print. Bring your own laptop or use one of the laptops available in Haute Studio. Materials will be provided.

Wednesday, August 20. Lego Lab: Challenge Series. Ages 8–12: Is your child up for a new Lego® challenge? At the Lego® Lab Challenge Series, your child can complete monthly builds with the help of their teammates, solve unusual problems, and experiment with new designs while improving their spatial awareness, self-confidence, and concentration at VCPL Main.

Thursday, August 21. Read to Walter at VCPL 12 Points. Ages 5–19: Is your child uncomfortable reading out loud? Maybe they just need a friendly ear—and Walter the Goldendoodle is ready to listen. Walter is a licensed therapy dog from the Alliance of Therapy Dogs who’s eager to hear a good story and whose calm presence will build your reluctant reader’s confidence.
Thursday, August 21.MagiKids at VCPL Main. Ages 8–18: Start your child on the journey to becoming a powerful wizard with Magic: The Gathering, a turn-based trading card game, and MagiKids! Developed to introduce young players to the concepts of Magic: The Gathering, MagiKids encourages participants to sort and build their own custom deck of spells, creatures, and artifacts before they challenge other players to a game that relies on skill just as much as luck and that encourages them to use critical thinking skills to overcome the pitfalls of random chance.

Ages 13 & Up: Before the Boston Celtics or the ISU Sycamores, Larry Bird was a skinny, quiet kid from French Lick with a passion for basketball. Though overlooked in his freshman year at Spring Valley High School, Bird shot into the spotlight in his senior year and left as the school’s all-time scoring leader. Join As If By Magic author Randy Mills as he digs into Bird’s early days of his high school basketball career and how Bird’s hard work and increased recognition turned him from the “Hick from French Lick” to “Larry Legend”.

Join us in Arendelle for a magical adventure filled with so many fun roles—from royal sisters and snowmen to dancing snowflakes, trolls, and talking reindeer! Come with high energy and your best stage voice! Wear closed-toe shoes you can move in (jazz shoes encouraged if you have them). Be ready to sing—any song works, even Happy Birthday! Bring sheet music or a cappella is fine. You will sing your song, learn choreography, and possibly cold read for a few roles. Registration required!
Monday, August 25. Art is Where You Find It: Mandala Art at WEST VCPL. Immerse yourself in the meditative symmetry of hand-drawn mandalas at Art Is Where You Find It! Create your own design using a grid, then use ink pens, watercolors, and acrylic paint to make a unique piece of artwork for your home.
Wednesday, August 27. Customize It! Screen Printing Workshop at VCPL Main. Ages 13 & Up: Discover how screen printing works, explore ways to personalize everyday items, and leave with a custom piece you made yourself at Customize It! Design a custom stencil using a Cricut cutting machine then use that stencil to screen print onto a zipper pouch or small bag. All materials will be provided.
