I know I’m not alone when it comes to struggling to come up with awesome baby play ideas. By comparison, mobile, verbal, and imaginative toddlers are easy to engage!

But that doesn’t mean that babies want to be left out of the playtime fun. I’ve been experimenting with baby play ideas, and here’s one of our baby’s most-recent favorites.

Sensory Baby Play–Fishing for Cereal

The other day, we were playing outside with a tub of water, and the baby noticed that a leaf had fallen in the tub. Naturally, she used her little fingers to scoop it up. And then she promptly shoved it in her mouth.

I applauded her fine motor skills, and then capitalized on her interest.

I took out the leaves, changed the water, and added cheerios.

This activity needed no explanation. She knew exactly what to do. She fished around for pieces of cereal and ate every bite she could catch.

Fine motor skill development. Hand-eye coordination exercise.

Baby play. Sensory fun. Snack.

This simple activity was an all-around win!

Warning, big siblings might want to jump in on the action. After all, who can resist soggy cereal?

Just a note, my baby was nine-months-old at time of writing and had no teeth. She loves cheerios (both soggy and dry), but please use discretion when offering snacks and play items that could be choking hazards. (Baby puffs would also work.) Similarly, this is your “adult supervision required” reminder for any time your baby/child plays around water. 🙂
