Once upon a time, the north end of Terre Haute was the place to be. In the 1940s, Folks would visit the 12 Points area for festivals, movie theaters, dancing schools, dress shops, and candy treats. But most people today know 12 Points only as a place in need of life support. Sure, people have tried to revitalize it. Once upon a time, the dream was that 12 Points would turn into something like Broad Ripple in Indianapolis.\u00a0But in July 2014, Jay Jones (the owner of the infamous 12 Points hotel) made plans to auction off the property and abandon his dreams<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Luckily,\u00a0there\u00a0are a few optimistic\u00a0business owners who haven’t given up on the area.<\/p>\n

Let me introduce you to three new \u00a0fun, kid-friendly destinations that will make you glad that there’s still hope for 12 Points.<\/p>\n

Jimmy’s Gelato<\/h2>\n

Let’s lead with the place that’s sure to be a hit with the kids. Who am I kidding? It’s my favorite too! GELATO is yum. Although flavor choices vary by day, some options you might find are vanilla bean, peanut butter cup, pistachio, baklava, mango, blackberry, and macadamia nut. Baklava gelato?! I can’t wait to try that one!<\/p>\n

Although prices could change, for now one scoop of gelato is a modest $1.95.<\/p>\n

Old Bank Grille Family Cuisine<\/h3>\n

The Old Bank Grille and Jimmy’s Gelato share an owner, restrooms, and customers. Why? Because it makes perfect sense to get dinner at the Grille and then grab gelato at Jimmy’s for dessert!<\/p>\n

We tried the Old Bank Grille for date night dinner and enjoyed the lasagna, salad bar, and the bit of Terre Haute history that showed up in the\u00a0decor.<\/p>\n

Oy Vey Bakery<\/h3>\n

Last but not least, the Oy Vey Bakery\u00a0brings a\u00a0delicious menu and lots of character to the neighborhood. It’s a Kosher deli with such tasty offerings as “upside down coffee,” freshly baked breads, pies, and pastries, and lasagna soup. I had the\u00a0lasagna soup; it was delicious.<\/p>\n

After you order in the deli, you can head next door to sit down to eat. It’s a deli, so you won’t see any waiters or waitresses cleaning\u00a0tables or refilling drinks. BUT,\u00a0you can check out the super-awesome bank vault from 12 Point’s golden days!<\/p>\n
