Homemade Baby Wipes

I have lots of friends who use cloth diapers, and I love them more because of it. But I am not a cloth diaper girl. I used to say it was because I was getting diapers for 2 or 3 cents a piece. (That’s ridiculously cheap. It’s more like 15 cents now.) But now I know it’s because I can barely stay on top of the laundry without adding in diapers for two kids. Basically, I’m lazy. So here’s my compromise: homemade baby wipes. They’re easy and cheap. This totally appeals to my lazy, frugal self.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Buy a roll of Bounty Select-a-Size. Some people swear that only Bounty works. I’ve tried other brands with varying degrees of success.
  2. Cut your roll in half. (Ignore my ragged edges. I’m not so great with a butcher knife.) Homemade baby wi
  3. Unroll the paper towels into your favorite baby wipe container.Homemade baby wipes
  4. Mix your wet ingredients–a tablespoon or so of oil (I use baby oil. Others have used olive oil or coconut oil), a tablespoon or so of your favorite baby wash, and a cup or so of warm water. I obviously don’t bother measuring, but if you’d like more precise measurements, check out this post.
  5. Pour the liquid over your paper towels.
  6. Use as you would your regular wipes.

That’s it!

A few things I’ve learned:

  • Big batches that aren’t used quickly can mold. I just make small batches, but others have suggested adding a little tea tree oil.
  • We throw these into zippered sandwich bags when we travel.
  • These can be used for other things (hand wipes at restaurants), but don’t flush them down the toilet. Duh.

Supplies:

  • Paper towels
  • Wipes container
  • Oil
  • Baby wash
  • Water
